The graceful marine mammals gliding through the water are Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis). While my primary focus is on fish, these highly intelligent and social creatures are a testament to the incredible diversity of life in the ocean. They are known for their sleek bodies and striking hourglass pattern, a blend of dark gray, tan, and white.
Common Dolphins are incredibly widespread, found in tropical and temperate waters around the globe. They travel in large, dynamic groups called pods, often numbering in the hundreds or even thousands. This communal behavior is a key survival strategy, allowing them to cooperate in hunting and offering protection from larger predators like sharks. Their playful and acrobatic nature, including leaping and bow-riding, makes them a favorite sight for anyone lucky enough to encounter them at sea.
