The Polka-Dot Drifter

The mesmerizing creatures pulsing in the water are a collection of Spotted Jellyfish (Phyllorhiza punctata). In my three decades of research, I have always been fascinated by this particular species' unique and delightful appearance. Their most defining feature is the numerous white spots covering their semi-transparent bells and cascading oral arms, giving them a distinct, polka-dot pattern.

These jellyfish are not passive floaters; they use powerful pulsations of their bells to propel themselves through the water. Below the bell, their large, cauliflower-like oral arms are perfectly designed for filtering tiny organisms from the water, making them efficient feeders. This group demonstrates the elegance and effectiveness of their design, a timeless form that has survived and thrived for millennia.
